Australian Shepherd
A tireless herding superstar with a kaleidoscope coat and an unmatched work ethic.
Back to All DogsGeneral Information
Despite their name, the Australian Shepherd was developed in the American West — not Australia. They are elite working herding dogs originally used by American ranchers to manage livestock. 'Aussies' are celebrated for their merle coat patterns, natural bob-tails (in some lines), and exceptional intelligence. In India, they are gaining popularity among active families and dog sport enthusiasts as a high-energy companion and agility competitor.
Behaviour & Temperament
Australian Shepherds are energetic, loyal, intelligent, and highly driven. They form strong bonds with their family and can be reserved with strangers. True working dogs — they require a minimum of 2 hours of vigorous daily exercise AND significant mental stimulation. Without it, they become destructive, obsessive, or develop neurotic behaviours. They may try to herd children, other pets, or even cars. They excel at agility, frisbee, flyball, and herding trials.
Breed Traits
What Makes This Breed Special
Health & Care
Australian Shepherds carry the MDR1/ABCB1 gene mutation (drug sensitivity) — genetic testing of parents is essential. They are prone to hip dysplasia, Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), progressive retinal atrophy, epilepsy, and deafness (in merle-to-merle breeding). Double merle breeding is highly unethical and produces blind/deaf puppies.
Price in India (INR)
Blue merle and red merle patterns are the most visually stunning and command the highest prices. Black tricolour and red tricolour are slightly more common. Always verify that merle pups come from single-merle parents (not double merle). Samaria Pet Shop only works with ethically bred Aussies.
