General Information
The Bullmastiff was developed in 19th century England by gamekeepers crossing the Mastiff with the Bulldog to create a powerful guard dog capable of tracking and restraining poachers. The breed is approximately 60% Mastiff and 40% Bulldog. They are known as 'The Gamekeeper's Night Dog'. In India, Bullmastiffs are popular guard dogs and family companions, valued for their natural protective instincts and calm demeanor.
Behaviour & Temperament
Bullmastiffs are calm, confident, and deeply protective. They are affectionate and gentle with family but highly suspicious of strangers. They do not bark excessively — they prefer to block and restrain rather than attack. They are stubborn and require patient, firm training from an early age. Moderate exercise of 45–60 minutes daily is sufficient. They are not suitable for inexperienced owners.

Health & Care
Bullmastiffs are prone to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, bloat (a life-threatening emergency), progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, and certain cancers. Their short lifespan is a breed characteristic. Keep them lean, avoid overfeeding, and schedule regular vet screenings. Their facial folds require daily cleaning.
Price in India (INR)
Fawn with black mask is the classic and most common colour. Brindle and red are also accepted. Import-quality European Bullmastiffs command premium pricing. Health screening of parents (hips, elbows, eyes) is crucial.
