About the Breed

General Information

The Chihuahua is the world's smallest recognized dog breed, originating from the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Despite their tiny size, they carry an enormous personality — confident, feisty, and surprisingly bold. Chihuahuas are among the longest-living dog breeds, often reaching 15–17 years. In India, they are popular city and apartment dogs admired for their compact portability, minimal space needs, and fierce loyalty.

Behaviour & Temperament

Chihuahuas are saucy, charming, bold, and intensely loyal to their primary person. They can be suspicious of strangers and protective of their owner — despite their tiny size. They are known to exhibit 'small dog syndrome' if not properly socialized and trained. They are better suited to households without very young children. They bond deeply with one or two people and can become possessive. Daily short walks and indoor play sessions suffice.

Health & Care

Chihuahuas are prone to hypoglycemia (especially puppies), hydrocephalus (water on the brain in poorly bred pups), patellar luxation, tracheal collapse, dental disease (severe overcrowding), and heart valve disease. Their small size means they are fragile — must be protected from falls and rough handling.

Price in India (INR)

Apple-head Chihuahuas are more popular than deer-head types. Long-coat vs smooth-coat varieties. Teacup Chihuahuas (below 1 kg) are extremely fragile and carry significant health risks — not recommended. Rare colours (merle, blue, chocolate) command premium prices but may carry additional health concerns.
