General Information

The Chow Chow is one of the world's oldest and most distinctive dog breeds, originating from northern China over 2,000 years ago. They are known for their lion-like mane, blue-black tongue, and aloof cat-like personality. Chow Chows are deeply devoted to one person or family but are reserved with strangers. They are rising in popularity in Indian cities as a prestige and companion breed.

Behaviour & Temperament

Chow Chows are independent, reserved, and loyal. Unlike many breeds, they are not overly eager to please, making training require patience and firm consistency. They bond deeply with one owner or family and can be protective. Early socialization is critical. They have low-to-moderate exercise needs and are more content with calm walks than vigorous play.

Health & Care

Chow Chows are prone to hip dysplasia, entropion (eyelid rolling inward), hypothyroidism, and skin conditions. Their thick double coat requires twice-weekly brushing. They are heat-sensitive — a real concern in Indian summers. Air-conditioned environments are preferred.

Price in India (INR)

₹40,000 – ₹80,000

Red and black Chow Chows are most common. Cream, blue, and cinnamon coloured Chows are rarer. Show-quality dogs with full, lion-like manes command significantly higher prices.
