General Information
The Dachshund, meaning 'Badger Dog' in German, was originally bred for hunting badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals. Their distinctive long body, short legs, and keen sense of smell make them unique among hound breeds. In India, Dachshunds (affectionately called 'Sausage Dogs' or 'Dashies') are popular in cities for their compact size, bold personality, and long lifespan.
Behaviour & Temperament
Dachshunds are curious, lively, and surprisingly brave for their size. They are loyal and affectionate with family but can be stubborn, which makes training require patience and consistency. They have a strong prey drive and may chase small animals. They love to dig and burrow — providing a designated digging area or tunnel toy satisfies this instinct. They can be vocal and protective.

Health & Care
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is the most significant health risk — their long spine is vulnerable to disc herniations, which can cause paralysis. Avoid jumping on/off furniture. Obesity dramatically worsens IVDD risk. They are also prone to progressive retinal atrophy, patellar luxation, and dental disease.

Three varieties: smooth-haired, long-haired, and wire-haired. Two sizes: standard and miniature. Dapple (merle) Dachshunds are rare and priced higher. Long-haired Dachshunds require more grooming.
