Multum in parvo — a lot of dog in a small body, packed with personality.
Back to All DogsGeneral Information
The Pug, with its iconic wrinkled face, curled tail, and round eyes, is one of the oldest toy breeds, originating from ancient China. Made famous in India by the Vodafone advertisements, Pugs have become one of the most recognised and beloved dog breeds in the country. Their compact size, charming expression, and adaptable personality make them perfect for apartment dwellers and city families.
Behaviour & Temperament
Pugs are playful, charming, mischievous, and deeply people-oriented. They are even-tempered and rarely aggressive, making them ideal for first-time dog owners. They crave human attention and company, often following their owners from room to room. Pugs are sensitive to hot and humid climates — a critical consideration in India. They have low exercise needs but require daily gentle walks.
Breed Traits
What Makes This Breed Special
Health & Care
Being brachycephalic (flat-faced), Pugs are prone to Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), which causes breathing difficulties. Their prominent eyes are vulnerable to injury and corneal ulcers. Wrinkle folds must be cleaned daily to prevent skin infections. They are also prone to obesity, hip dysplasia, and spinal problems (Pug Dog Encephalitis).
Price in India (INR)
Fawn with black mask is the most common colour. Black Pugs are less common. Pricing depends on pedigree quality and facial structure. 'Show-quality' Pugs with rounder heads and compact bodies fetch premium prices.
