Rottweiler
A confident, powerful protector with a calm, devoted heart for its family.
Back to All DogsGeneral Information
The Rottweiler, one of the world's oldest herding breeds, has evolved into a powerful working and guarding dog. In India, Rottweilers are kept primarily as guard dogs and family protectors. Despite their intimidating size, well-bred and properly socialized Rottweilers are calm, confident, and deeply devoted to their families. They require an experienced owner who can provide firm, consistent leadership.
Behaviour & Temperament
Rottweilers are inherently protective and may be reserved around strangers. With family, they are gentle, playful, and affectionate. They are calm by nature but require early socialization with children, strangers, and other animals to prevent over-protectiveness. Their powerful build demands at minimum 2 hours of structured exercise and mental work daily. They respond excellently to Schutzhund-style training.

Health & Care
Rottweilers are prone to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, aortic stenosis (a heart condition), and cruciate ligament ruptures. Bone cancer (osteosarcoma) is a concern in older Rottweilers. Maintain a lean body weight to reduce joint stress and schedule bi-annual veterinary screenings.
