Saint Bernard
A gentle giant with a warm soul — born to rescue, built to love.
Back to All DogsGeneral Information
The Saint Bernard is an iconic giant breed developed by monks in the Swiss Alps for mountain rescue. Known globally as a gentle giant, they are among the most patient and affectionate dogs in the world. Despite their enormous size, they make excellent family dogs for households with space and a commitment to their special care needs. In India, they are a prestigious and rare breed, ideal for cooler climates.
Behaviour & Temperament
Saint Bernards are exceptionally calm, patient, and gentle — even with very young children. They are slow-moving, quiet, and rarely aggressive, though their size alone deters intruders. They are naturally social and enjoy company. Due to their giant size, early obedience training is critical to ensure they remain manageable as adults. They require moderate daily exercise — 1 hour is typically sufficient.

What Makes This Breed Special
Health & Care
Saint Bernards are prone to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, heart conditions (dilated cardiomyopathy), bloat (gastric torsion), and osteosarcoma. Their size places significant stress on joints. Keeping them lean, providing orthopedic bedding, and scheduling regular vet check-ups are essential. Their heavy drooling requires daily facial cleaning. They require a cool environment in India — not suited to very hot climates without air conditioning.
Price in India (INR)
Saint Bernards are rare in India, which drives their premium pricing. Long-haired Saints are more popular than smooth-coated ones. Import-quality pups from European bloodlines command the highest prices. Samaria Pet Shop connects buyers with verified, reputable breeders offering health-screened pups.
