About the Breed

General Information

The Siberian Husky was originally bred by the Chukchi people of Siberia as a sled dog capable of travelling vast distances in extreme cold. In India, they have become one of the most sought-after breeds for their extraordinary wolf-like appearance, piercing blue or multi-coloured eyes, and energetic personality. Owning a Husky in India requires careful climate management and significant daily exercise commitment.

Behaviour & Temperament

Huskies are outgoing, mischievous, and extremely sociable. They rarely bark but are known to 'talk' through howling and vocalizations. They are friendly with strangers and make poor guard dogs. Huskies have an extremely high prey drive and a well-documented escape-artist reputation — secure enclosures are a must. They require 2+ hours of vigorous exercise daily to prevent destructive behaviour.

Health & Care

Huskies in Indian climates require air-conditioned environments during summer months. They are susceptible to hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, hereditary eye conditions (juvenile cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy), and zinc-responsive dermatosis. Their thick double coat, while shedding heavily twice a year, should NEVER be shaved — it regulates their temperature.

Price in India (INR)

Blue-eyed or bi-eyed (heterochromia) Huskies with strong facial markings command the highest prices. Pure white Huskies are rare and pricier. Wooly-coated Huskies are also sought after. Climate management costs in India should be factored into the long-term ownership cost.
