General Information

The Tibetan Mastiff is one of the most ancient and primitive dog breeds in existence, originating from the Himalayan mountain ranges of Tibet, China, Nepal, and India. They were used for centuries to guard livestock, monasteries, and palaces. In China, top-quality Tibetan Mastiffs have fetched multi-million dollar prices. In India, they are an ultra-rare prestige breed, highly sought after in colder regions like Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh.

Behaviour & Temperament

Tibetan Mastiffs are independent, intelligent, and highly territorial. They are devoted to their family but deeply aloof with strangers. Unlike most guard dogs, they think independently rather than taking direction from owners — they decide for themselves when to act. They are mostly nocturnal (active at night, guarding) and can be very vocal at night. They require experienced owners and early socialization.

Health & Care

Tibetan Mastiffs are prone to hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, seizures, hereditary eye anomalies, and skin conditions. Their massive double coat requires brushing twice weekly and sheds heavily once a year ('blowing coat'). They absolutely require cool climates — not suitable for hot plains of India without exceptional air conditioning. They thrive in hill stations.

Price in India (INR)

₹1,00,000 – ₹5,00,000+

The Tibetan Mastiff is the most expensive dog breed in India and globally. Golden-maned 'Lion Dogs' and double-coated Tibetan Mastiffs with exceptional facial features command the highest prices. Import quality pups can cost several lakh rupees.
